Days 11,12

Every day has been just a little bit different from the ones before. There’s always something new – a new expression, a new rhythm or other milestone. The big one recently – over the past 2-3 days, Luca graduated to sleeping in 4-hr chunks. Lest you missed that , allow me to restate – Luca graduated to sleeping in 4 hr chunks! Elapsed time between the end of one feed and the start of a new one used to average about 90 min. When this carries on over multiple days, you slip into a zombie-like state of being – calm, no longer capable of getting worked up about anything. If the Martians were to invade Earth, your only question would be if you had time for a quick nap before they broke in through the front door. So, when Luca suddenly decided to start sleeping 4 hrs at a shot, as far as I was concerned, he might as well have medaled at the Olympics. And this is the dad talking – Sophie’s joy far exceeded mine.

The other thing that kicked in recently was a bout of god-knows-what that starts up around 7pm and dies down around 9pm. All I can tell is that it has something to do with digestion. He starts out calm but you can tell from the way he starts to scrunch up his face that something isn’t quite right. Then his head starts turning from side to side. The scrunching-of-face-grimacing quickly increases in amplitude and is soon accompanied by wild windmill swings of the arms. By now Luca is pretty red in the face & every part of him is squirming and protesting. This culminates in an anguished wail and an explosion of sound at the diaper end of things. Then – and I kid you not – a look of the utmost peace settles on his face and he goes back to being his normal, tranquil self. This cycle repeats about every 5-10 min, for about an hour or so, at which point, either the digestive demons disappear, or he’s too exhausted to protest anymore. Either way, he falls asleep.

He’s lying in a bassinet by my feet right now just starting to do the squirming thing. But this one is for a feed. It’s been 4 hours.
